Chief Scientist

B.S., 1987, Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium)

Ph.D., 1992, Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve

I started my professional career as a researcher, with a keen interest in the development and application of statistical methodology to the study of the spatial variability of soil properties. Later I widened my field of application by addressing issues encountered in such diverse fields as reservoir engineering (modeling of spatial distribution of petrophysical properties and impact on flow predictions), climatology (spatial interpolation of temperature and rainfall using elevation as secondary information), remote sensing (use of satellite-based NDVI index to predict field biomass), geomarketing, optimization of design of experiments, air pollution, or river sediment remediation.

While characterizing contaminated sites, I realized how important the quantification of environmental exposure and its relationships to human health is. Such endeavor is multidisciplinary by nature and its success relies on the availability of good data, theoretically sound statistical techniques, user-friendly software to analyze and visualize results, and in-depth training of these users.

Increasingly frustrated by the lack of interdisciplinary and applied research in academia, I joined BioMedware, Inc. because it allows me to conduct high-level research at the frontier between health spatial statistics and geostatistics, contribute to the rapid and sound implementation of these new tools in innovative and user-friendly software, and participate to the training of scientists and academics.

Notable Achievements

Authored more than 60 journal articles and the reference textbook Geostatistics for Natural Resources Evaluation. Reviewer for more than 40 journals and member of Ph.D. committees in European, American and Australian Universities. PI on several NIH, NSF, SERDP and NASA research grants, and consultant for various agencies, including EPA and NRC.

Personal

When I don't work...which is not very often...I like playing golf and pool, watching movies, and traveling with my family. The four of us have visited most of the US, from the Cascades in Washington State to Acadia National Park in Maine. I am a very laid back person and appreciate the flexibility and work environment at BioMedware. As all Europeans, I like good food; so I enjoy sharing meals with all my colleagues during the BioMedware retreats.
