Dr. Geoffrey Jacquez is participating in the Vespucci Institute on Geographic Information Science

Location: Catalina (Island), California

The Vespucci Initiative for the Advancement of Geographic Information Science is announcing the Vespucci Institute on Geographic Information Science:  Synthesizing Health, Space and Time

Facilitators: Myles Cockburn (USC), Geoffrey Jacquez (SUNY-Buffalo), Martin Raubal (ETH Zürich), and John Wilson (USC)

Invited participants include:

  • David Balshaw, Emerging Technologies, Bioengineering, and Systems Biology Program, NIEHS
  • Daniel Janies, University of North Carolina at Charlotte
  • Jean Luc Neptune, Health 2.0
  • Todd Park, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
  • Doug Richardson, Association of American Geographers
  • Ben Sawyer, Games for Health

Aims & Scope

Celebrating the fifth centenary of Vespucci's discoveries, the Vespucci Initiative recaptures his spirit of multi-disciplinary intellectual inquiry to explore new frontiers of knowledge and new territories. To that end it organizes and conducts a range of research and teaching activities, bringing together senior scientists and promising young researchers from around the world. This unique interdisciplinary mix creates what has been called the Medici Effect and perhaps it is no coincidence that most Vespucci institutes have been held in Florence, Italy to date! All of the participants share a special interest in the locational aspects of societal challenges. These aspects are being studied and exploited in the emerging field of Geographic Information Science and are being implemented within the GIS, GPS, Location Based Services (LBS) and related industries (see http://www.giscience.org, http://www.agile-online.org, http://www.ucgis.org).

The workshops and other events sponsored by the Vespucci Initiative are open to post-graduate researchers at all stages of their careers in the academic, public, not-for-profit, and private sectors, selected on a competitive basis through an open call for expression of interest.

The 2013 Vespucci Synthesizing Health, Space, and Time Institute marks a new beginning given both its location and timing. This will be the first Vespucci workshop to be held outside Europe and the first to be scheduled in the northern hemisphere spring season. It provides an inspiring and productive opportunity for peer-to-peer interaction with leading international experts in the field. Participants will:

  • Learn the state of the art in health geography
  • Understand and explore tomorrow's research and market challenges
  • Be challenged to think laterally outside their daily work setting
  • Present their own work and ideas to receive feedback and advice
  • Get one-on-one access to experts in a relaxed and productive setting
  • Improve presentation and team work skills
  • Return home refreshed and newly motivated

The Vespucci format is multi-faceted and will include:

  • Topical presentations and group projects
  • Analyses of case studies
  • Discussions and critiques of methodology
  • Skill-development sessions
  • Opportunities for working on
    • joint publications in international journals
    • project proposals to funding agencies or management
    • business plans

The Spring Institute is a not-for-profit activity of the Spatial Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California (this year’s local host).

Who should apply?

  • University researchers and faculty at all levels, from health as well as spatial disciplines
  • Project managers and researchers in industry in the not-for-profit and government sectors
  • Developers of LBS, SDI, and e-Government solutions

Dr. Pierre Goovaerts is conducting the seminar titled "The role of Geostatistics in Environmental Epidemiology"

Location: INERIS Paris, France

Abstract

Since its development in the mining industry, geostatistics has emerged as the primary tool for spatial data analysis in various fields, ranging from earth and atmospheric sciences, to agriculture, soil science, environmental studies, and more recently exposure assessment. In the last few years, these tools have been tailored to the field of medical geography or spatial epidemiology, which is concerned with the study of spatial patterns of disease incidence and mortality and the identification of potential “causes” of disease, such as environmental exposure or socio-demographic factor.

This seminar will provide an overview of geostatistical methods available for the analysis of environmental and health data both at the individual-level and aggregated. It will also introduce a suite of techniques for the visualization and analysis of time series of health data, including 3D display of health outcomes in a combined time and geography space, binomial kriging to filter noise in the data, joinpoint regression analysis to model time trends, and hierarchical cluster analysis to classify geographical units according to their temporal trends.

Dr. Geoffrey Jacquez, Discussant at AAG: Geo-Health Research at NIH-Issues in modelling population based cancer statistics

Location: Los Angeles, California

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has a long history of developing geospatial methods for calculating cancer surveillance statistics, and for the dissemination and use of these statistics in geospatial research. The methods developed by the NCI are often applicable to many other health concerns besides cancer. This session will include a number of papers describing recent NCI-initiated research work on issues in calculating and modelling population based cancer statistics.

Organizers: Dave Stinchcomb, Zaria Tatalovich

Chair: Zaria Tatalovich

Participants: Alicia Rolin, A Spatial and Statistical Method to Enable Computation of Cancer Statistics at the Congressional District Level

Li Zhu, Confidence Intervals for Ranked Age-adjusted Rates across Geographic Units

Discussants: Gerard Rushton and Geoffrey Jacquez

Sponsorships: Health and Medical Geography Specialty Group and Spatial Analysis and Modeling Specialty Group
