Kathryn Conlon is presenting I-HEAT at the CDC Science Symposium on Climate and Health

Location: Atlanta, GA

Kathryn Conlon (University of Michigan, School of Public Health–Environmental Health Sciences) is presenting the BioMedware and UM collaborative project:  Internet-based heat evaluation and assessment tool (I-HEAT).

Description:

A presentation will provide a general background on the issue of heat and adverse health outcomes, and the challenges facing local health departments and decision-makers in preparing for and responding to heat events. The I-HEAT application will be demonstrated either via web-access (currently available, Figure 1) or in video form, depending on audio-visual capabilities at the symposium facility. In addition to presenting the responses from the research groups’ user surveys and focus group responses during the aforementioned workshop, this presentation will provide context, based on results from a CDC-funded case-study (Reducing Social Disparities of Heatwave Impacts in a Changing Climate, R18-EH000348) in which researchers interviewed community leaders and members of four cities, including Detroit, MI, to understand behavioral responses to heat and the local programming that exists to address heat-related health issues. Drawing on user survey data from the pilot demonstration of I-HEAT, this presentation will describe how I-HEAT could address risk management strategies or align with emergent heat preparedness efforts described by interviewees in the CDC study.
